Being onsite every week at hundreds of maintenance properties over the years, I’ve often thought about how important the idea of form following function is for landscaping. Everyone wants their gardens to look nice, that’s a given. But it’s also important that a landscape isn’t awkward to live with or difficult to maintain once it’s installed. Simple concepts such as allowing proper spacing for plants, not over-planting, choosing plants that won’t outgrow their location and planning gardens that can be maintained without a great deal of time and effort are often overlooked.
