Sustainable Landscaping is about working with your local environment to create a natural landscape that is both beautiful, and easy to maintain.
Principles of design and maintenance in a Sustainable Landscape:
• Planting for the long term [ex. Plant perennial gardens as opposed to annual gardens]
• Picking the Right Plant – Right Place [choose plants that match your site’s conditions for soil type, water and sunlight,
• Using Native Plants
• Conserving water and energy [ex .smaller lawns = less mowing with power equipment and less water for turf]
• Composting/Mulching [3” of mulch helps retain water and reduce weeding for garden beds]
• Reducing inputs required to maintain landscape [less water, fertilizer, power equipment use]
• Recycling [lawn clippings, fallen leaves, re-using old bricks for walkways, garden walls, etc…]
The point is to design, install and maintain a garden that is in balance with the natural landscape and environment around it.
